Natural vs Not

There’s no topic in the beauty industry more polarizing than natural cosmetics versus mainstream products. While some people don’t really care about parabens and other synthetic chemicals, others have an anxiety attack every time they read the labels on the back of beauty products (I know I do.)

Scared by ingredient lists as long and incomprehensible as a James Joyce novel, more and more women are opting for cosmetics that are free of pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organism.

But, no matter what side you are one, we are united by a common goal: we want high performance long lasting beauty products. While the promise of chemical-free cosmetics is great, at the end of the day, we want products that work.

So, can those two – long lasting effects and natural ingredients – live in harmony?

Well, as it turns out, they can.

Debunking the Myth: Cosmetics with Natural Ingredients Aren’t as Effective as Mainstream Brand

There’s a common misconception that green cosmetics can’t deliver the same high-performance results as big name brands. Most people argue that, because natural beauty products don’t have the chemical ingredients that make lipstick or mascara last all day, you have to reapply them more often. More than that, according to some, finding natural cosmetics in a vibrant color is as hard as finding a tear drop in the ocean.

Skeptics have a reason to doubt the ability of natural beauty products to deliver long lasting results. Until recently, many natural cosmetics couldn’t compete with big brand names regarding performance. Products claiming to be free of harmful chemicals, such as parabens, formaldehyde, and phthalates, often lacked the key feature to make them work. Most of them didn’t have the right formulation to deliver the lasting coverage effect or the vibrant color to lips and eyes similar to conventional products. The main reason people wear makeup is to cover their imperfections, and if products can’t deliver great results, they usually skip them.

But, here’s the good news: the world of natural cosmetics have made colossal advances in the past few years. Nowadays, green beauty products can perform just as well – or dare I say even better – than mainstream skincare products.

But, as with anything in life, the effectiveness of a product differs from person to person. So, while jojoba oil based product can do wonders for my skin, it might irritate yours.

Which leads me to…

Always Choose Products Suited for Your Skin Type

While algae-based products, argan oil, or natural pigments might be a novelty to us, they’re ancient ingredients, tried and tested through millennia, and praised for their exceptional properties. However, you need to pay careful attention to your skin needs and choose cosmetics with ingredient products that are suited for your skin type.

It’s crucial to be able to see past the marketing messages and look for the best formulations for your skin-care concerns. That way, you save money and protect your skin.

There are many health and environmental benefits to using natural cosmetics. Ultimately, it’s up to you to make the best choice for your skin.
